ICTI Research Associate – Dr. Nithya Vinayakumar Geetha, wins prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship 2020-21
July 17, 2020; ICTI Research Associate, Dr. Nithya Vinayakumar Geetha, has been awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship, considered among the most prestigious awards in the world for international study and professional development. She is amoung the two awardees from across the globe who received the Commonwealth QMUL Scholarship 2020-21. She will be studying MSc Global Public Health and Policy at Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom.
Nithya received the United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan Scholarship, which will cover all fees, to-and-fro travel, visa expenses and also provide monthly stipend, worth over Rs 3.5 million, during the 12 months Masters programme and research to be undertaken at London from September 2020.
As a Research Associate at International Centre for Technological Innovations she gained opportunity to coordinate the Centre’s project in Healthcare. She has been rewarded on the basis of her leadership skills while handling the project and commitment for sustainable development. Nithya is an Ayurvedic Doctor and certified yoga trainer. "Mental health is important global public health issue. The number of psychiatrists and counsellors in India remain at an abysmal low. Nearly half of India’s corporate sector employees suffer from depression. About 20% of Indian mothers are affected by postpartum depression," says Dr. Nithya. "My research focuses on effectiveness of yoga in reducing postpartum depression among new moms. I aim to promote integrated treatment blending ayurveda, yoga with psychiatry to manage mental and emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety, or depression."
