ICTI Research Associate – Sony Thomas, wins prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship 2019-20
July 06, 2019; ICTI Research Associate, Sony Thomas, has been awarded the Commonwealth Scholarship, considered among the most prestigious awards in the world for international study and professional development. He is the only awardee from across the globe who received the Commonwealth UWS Scholarship 2019-20. He will be studying MSc Advanced Computer Systems Development at the University of the West of Scotland in the United Kingdom.
Sony received the United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan Scholarship, which will cover all fees, to-and-fro travel, visa expenses and also provide monthly stipend, worth over Rs 3.5 million, during the 12 months Masters programme and research to be undertaken at Scotland from September 2019.
As a Research Associate at International Centre for Technological Innovations he gained opportunity to coordinate the Centre’s project in Digital Technologies for Agriculture, and managed a spinout venture – Farmertree Producer Company, a farmer producer organisation based in Kuttanad Kerala. He has been rewarded on the basis of his outstanding social commitment in empowering the farmer producer organisation for welfare of small and marginal farmers. “More than 80% of farmers in India are small and marginal farmers with less than two hectares of land. Problems of farmers can be effectively addressed by collectivising them into farmer producer organisations. Farmers need smart technologies that are affordable and appropriate for small farms. We can revolutionise agricultural industry by building digital infrastructure for sustainable food production, efficient business operations and marketing, through advancements in data science, computer engineering, GIS, internet of things, and mobile communication technologies”, says Sony.
Besides Sony, another ICTI Research Associate Sreeram Valsalakumar has also received Commonwealth Scholarship this year to study MSc Renewable Energy Engineering at University of Exeter, UK. “We are delighted to have two Commonwealth Scholars from ICTI this year” says Aaron George, Director- ICTI “It is a recognition for outstanding ideas and research happening at ICTI and the new contributions our researchers are able to make in changing lives of people”
