March 30, 2019; ICTI Research Associate, Akshay Krishnan, has been awarded scholarship by Duke University's Nicholas School of Environment in USA to study Master of Environmental Management.

Akshay received scholarship worth Rs 6 million, for undertaking the 24 months Masters programme and research at Duke University from September 2019. The scholarship has been awarded through The Friends of the Earth Scholarship Fund, The Yasuomi Tanaka Memorial Fellowship, Professional Student Merit Scholarship and Need-based Grant offered by the Duke University. “Admission was incredibly competitive this year, but we found your (Akshay's) experience and personal story particularly impressive,” said Dr. Toddi A. Steelman, Stanback Dean, Nicholas School of the Environment, announcing the award.

After completing mechanical engineering studies in 2018, Akshay joined the International Centre for Technological Innovations as Research Associate. Rural areas are home to over 65% of the India’s population. Many sustainable energy technologies are developed globally every year. However, people living in rural communities rarely have access to these products. Low density of population, poor infrastructure and distribution challenges makes the problem of servicing rural villages individually, difficult and expensive for manufacturers. Akshay’s research at International Centre for Technological Innovations focused on how NGOs can build capacity of women self-help groups in marketing, installation, repair of renewable energy products like solar inverters, cookers, dryers, water heaters, lanterns, agricultural pumps, etc. Furthermore generating employment by establishing community based renewable energy shops in villages to sell renewable energy products with after-sales services.

I am thrilled and grateful to be awarded the scholarship to study at the Duke University – one of the world’s best university” says Akshay. “I look forward to an enriching research involvement that will help me make significant contribution to global development”.
