ICTI Research Scholar – Biji K P, wins prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship for 2014-15

June 15, 2014; ICTI Research Scholar, Biji Kochuveettil Pillai, has been awarded the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship. She happens to be the only awardee from across the globe for the Commonwealth Westminster Scholarship 2014-15, to pursue Masters in International Development Management at the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom.

Biji got the United Kingdom Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan Scholarship, which will cover all fees, to-and-fro travel, visa expenses and also provide monthly stipend, worth over Rs 31 lakhs, during the 12 month Masters programme and research to be undertaken at Westminster from September 2014.

Biji graduated with BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering in 2013. As a Research Associate with ICTI she gained opportunities to work on projects in new product development, employment generation for rural communities and promotion of Farmers’ Producer Organisations. India has over 300million small and marginal farmers who depend on agriculture for income and employment. Collectivising Farmers into Producer Organisations is an effective way of stimulating economic development, rural employment generation, addressing global food security and reducing poverty. In fact, Biji was selected for the Commonwealth Scholarship by 5 Universities. She was offered Public Policy at University of Reading, Corporate Social Responsibility at University of Stirling, Environmental Studies at Loughborough University, Innovation Creativity and Enterprise Management at Newcastle University. She however choose to join the Masters Programme in International Development Management at University of Westminster, as she believes it would help her make a real difference in the lives of farming communities of India.

The Commonwealth Scholarships in the United Kingdom program is funded by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, enabling students from Commonwealth countries to pursue advanced academic study in the UK. For the past many years, ICTI researchers have been able to bag this prestigious scholarship.
